Frères Ennemis plot

Driss and Manuel both grew up in the same city, where the sense of belonging to a region is much stronger than to a country, nation or culture. The same goes for Manuel, who built his life that way. Driss, on the other hand, fled. Today, both will face the consequences of their choices. And for both men there is a price.

A film about two best friends growing up in the Parisian Banlieues. One chooses the straight path and joins the police force. The other remains stuck in the criminal underworld. Naturally, they are confronted with each other. Been there, done that for yet another extreme acting duo.

Schoenaerts, furthermore, does a fine job and passes perfectly for someone with a big mouth but a small heart. The contrast with the quieter Reda Kateb is cliché, but successful nonetheless. It is not so easy to outgrow the banlieues, let alone as a police officer, who is arguably the enemy of the community. The brotherhood and unity are well portrayed by Oelhoffen, as already seen in the first scene where one of the friends is released from prison. Entertaining, to be sure, but nowhere truly memorable.

Watched this one on a whim and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't wow either. The film was a bit too long, which made some parts feel a bit weaker. The cast did a good job though, and visually it was fine. The ending was actually quite surprising.

Nice to have seen it once, but I wasn't blown away.

Matthias Schoenaerts is good in his portrayal of a gritty mid-range crime film that aligns well with recent, very topical murderous conflicts between drug gangs.
