Sibylle sees a life full of hatred and violence from which she wants to escape. She then has the idea to spend a few months with her sixteen-year-old son Samuel in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan before she is lost for good. Accompanied by their two horses, they embark on a journey where they are confronted with nature and the local people.

I personally like films that take place in vast, mountainous landscapes and in which little happens. They can't last long enough for me on a large canvas. And when it also concerns a mother and son who cross the mountains of Kyrgyzstan on horseback to sort out their relationship - at least, that's what the mother wants - then as far as I'm concerned, little can go wrong and little will go wrong. in this film, although the story is quite clichéd and therefore predictable. But that's just how it goes in life.
Yet there is one thing wrong: the casting. In the mother I constantly see a Sylvia Witteman face (sorry, the actress can't do anything about that) and in the son, with the best will in the world, I cannot see an adolescent boy - even 16 years old, says the synopsis . That certainly gnaws away at your viewing pleasure.

After 'Un Amour Impossible', released last week, about a complex mother-daughter relationship, there is now 'Continuer', about a complex mother-son relationship. Striking detail: Virginie Efira plays the leading role as the mother in both films. In Continuer, that mother is called Sybille and she travels on horseback through the wasteland of Kyrgyzstan with her temperamental, estranged son Samuel (Kacey Mottet Klein). Initially there is mostly deafening silence between them and they move uncomfortably past each other, their underlying pain and resentment unspoken. When verbal communication does take place, it is with the necessary venom (Samuel) and a lot of decibels (mother). It raises many questions about their mutual relationship, but especially about what happened in history (between them). However, Joachim Lafosse is sparing with answers and leaves much to the imagination, using at times powerful imagery. For me, this and the beautiful nature and the way in which the local population is portrayed are where the power of this film lies. A major drawback for me is the lack of information and context, which leaves me with many questions afterwards and the feeling that I have hardly made any connection with the main characters.

I like slow movies, but this was really hard to get through, even with the limited running time. In any case, I thought it was a strange idea of French people wandering around in Kyrgyzstan. The idea alone quickly prevented me from getting "into" the film.
Boring is indeed the right wording, although harsh, but I couldn't do much with it. Despite the beautiful decor, that does enhance some films. Lots of images without sound, the dialogues are sparse and remain functional. Here and there the silent moments are just enriching when images indicate more than words. But these moments are few and far between.
