Probably not the worst, but certainly the most mind-boggling movie of 2018 I hope. We already know that the three main protagonists prevent a bloodbath on the train from the title at the end of the story, but what precedes that in this film is simply not to be seen. Dorothy Blyskal's screenplay is as amateurish as the acting of Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos playing themselves. A stunt that was disastrous because the three men present themselves as colourless, dull men who have the most banal conversations with each other via Skype - a hobby that we unfortunately have been part of. After the cringe-inducing prologue about the school years of the three main characters, there is a veiled tribute to military discipline. Anyone who doesn't find that intolerable will certainly be annoyed by the green and yellow when Specer, Anthony and Alek follow (in real time, that's how it feels) on their journey through Rome, Venice, Berlin and Amsterdam. For completely nonsensical reasons, a discussion follows about whether they want to go to Paris! Apart from three annoying teasers, it takes about 80 minutes before the men finally catch that train to Paris. Then follows the only interesting part of the film, although there are some hilarious mistakes in it. Note the spelling mistake in the warning above the window in the train at Amsterdam station, but also the completely unappealing stand-in for President Hollande. It has become an amateurish mess and certainly the low point in Eastwood's career... as a director!

The train scene would have been enough, but then this movie would have only lasted 10 minutes. The rest of the film is (as far as I'm concerned) superfluous American patriotism.

Not dear Eastwood.

Although I thought it was a nice choice to let the main actors play themselves. That gives such a film a little extra flair. It's a shame they aren't great actors, so you should be able to tolerate some awkwardness left and right, but it's probably better than the alternative.

The problem is (as is often the case) Eastwood himself, who really goes the extra mile here. Themes like predestination, religion are performed in a thick sauce of patriotism and leave a very sour aftertaste. Actually no idea how the three protagonists look at that, but thought it was absolutely inappropriate in a movie like this.

Furthermore, there is clearly too little material based on the incident itself, so a lot of padding is used to get through the first hour. In addition, no attention is paid to the attacker himself, that remains just a "mean" figure.

Thin.
