"The legend"
In 754 AD the monk Boniface is killed near Dokkum, according to history sources by "barbarian" warriors. Was he indeed murdered in cold blood by a bunch of bloodthirsty savages, or is that just the Christian version of history? 'Redbad' tells the story of the noble Frisian warrior Redbad who ends up with the Vikings after the invasion of the Franks in the Northern Netherlands. From there, he plans his return: to avenge his father's death and confront the advancing Christianity.

The Frisians speak Dutch, the Danes speak English and a solar eclipse is a full moon. It says about the abysmal level of this epic that can hardly be endured. Sad are the many continuity errors in the scenes in cold castle rooms, where the breath can be seen in medium shots, but not in close-ups! Gijs Naber does his utmost in the title role, but Roel Reiné makes an absolute mess of it, helped by Alex van Galen's screenplay, which is nothing more than hot air, dotted with countless clichés. Just as in the superior Michiel de Ruyter (2015) Reiné makes frequent use of slow-motion and artificial sound effects, but in Redbad the fight scenes filmed in a messy way (but not messy enough to see that the extras can't do anything about it) and poorly edited (sometimes you can't tie a rope). The 3D blood also has a high Copy/Paste content. Jack Wouterse deserves the prize for the most dramatic interpretation and that is certainly no compliment. Then there's that terrible, solemn score that just won't go away and just underlines that this is pure hot air. The most amazing thing is that I managed to complete the 160 minutes, an achievement for which I wholeheartedly congratulate myself! Which is not to say that I would recommend anyone to take on the same challenge.

Not as bad as one would have you believe, but unfortunately also not as good as Reiné's better work. Visually, the film gets a bit boring after a while, while for example the much discussed Wouterse was fine. He skims through his scenes in an excellent way. Could have been out for half an hour.

Redbad, if you're up for fun. Well, this was not such a pleasant viewing experience. The dogs don't like this bread, do they? What really ugly filtered, looks so cheap. Lengthy pieces in which nothing seems to happen, which in any case add nothing to the story - an hour and a half could have easily gone off - interspersed with amateurish plays in which the acting is so pitifully bad. Street theater level. Jack Wouterse in particular, oh oh how bad, brings the whole movie down with his weird acting, as far as that was still possible. Every now and then there is a fierce scene, but they are so clearly copied from Game of Thrones.. The boy being pushed off the tower, for example.
