Quite horrible.

There are a few funny moments here and there, but they're mostly isolated. This is also largely due to a few supporting roles, but that's not entirely surprising; many American comedies suffer from this. Perhaps they prefer to keep the leads a bit more tame and boring, to avoid alienating as many people as possible.

Furthermore, it's a film that harps on about #girlpower. McCarthy harping on about equal pay, that women should support each other instead of making life difficult, the almost seamless integration of a woman approaching 50 into a university that seems like something out of a five-year-old's imagination... it's truly unwatchable.

And then you end up watching a crappy mini-performance by Christina Aguilera, who just pops in to sing a bit of Fighter. Because that's really what this film needed to ram it down your throat even further. No, there's probably an audience for this, but I'm not one of them. Forced, fake American junk that's especially not funny.

1.0*

Twenty-three years ago, Deanna [Melissa McCarthy] gave up her archaeology studies to marry Dan [Matt Walsh]. But on the day her daughter Maddie [Molly Gordon] moves to a college campus, Dan announces he's leaving Deanna for Marcie [Julia Bowen]. After crying to her parents [Jacki Weaver, Stephen Root], she decides to finish her archaeology degree anyway. This means she'll be living on the same campus as her daughter. A standard plot, but the screenplay (written by McCarthy with director Falcone, who has a cameo as the Über-chauffeur) avoids most of the clichés, especially regarding Deanna's relationship with her daughter and her campus friends. Despite this, the plot is little more than a framework for what is essentially a McCarthy one-woman show.

Life of the Party is a super fun comedy starring Melissa McCarthy, who always guarantees plenty of humor. It's not all high-brow, but it's highly entertaining.
