Fairly fascinating historical epic, a kind of sequel to Braveheart in terms of events, but not nearly as good. The characters remain a bit on the surface and the film is rather messy, causing the attention to slacken more than once. Fortunately, Chris Pine is quite good in the lead role and there is just enough spectacle to keep up with the lesson. Visually, everything looks convincing and impressive, with beautiful camera work and a well-maintained production design.

Comparing to Braveheart is apparently inevitable. Outlaw King tells the story that takes place after the death of William Wallace, but otherwise there are only incredibly big differences to be found: bombasm vs austerity, historically incorrect vs correct etc. As much as I like Braveheart, Outlaw King does it in a very other way. Undoubtedly, the budget would also have been a lot lower.

First of all, Pine. As far as I'm concerned, a fine Robert The Bruce. I didn't know Robert personally, but apparently the rest did, because a sober king is not possible. No, he must be some kind of clown like Mel Gibson. I don't think I'll be able to smile again when My brothers are killed, wife and daughter kidnapped and my castle burnt down. I really liked it. No pressure, but just a hard, cold world with the emotions that go with it. It's okay to laugh every now and then, like that bone-dry remark made by the king when the trebuchet was fired. Also nice and hard, like that brother of Robert who hung up and then gets a knife in his stomach, so that all the entrails fall out. A few posts above someone performs and then complains that the throat didn't come into the picture explicitly.

Someone else calls this a copy of Braveheart. That kind of comment baffles me a bit. So many people who have not understood this film and who are talking some bullshit to substantiate their opinion. Would they also have seen the fantastic climax? This is the action I quite missed in Redbad. This is where it gets really hard.

In any case, the truth is honored. Robert The Bruce waged an effective guerilla war, but I don't think you see much of that. I wonder if the 20 minutes cut out shed some light on that. Also a big kudos to the creators. These kinds of films are also rarely made.

Historically a sequel to Braveheart. With Robert The Bruce who rebels after the death of William Wallace. The original cut was 4 hours long, and at times it looked like it was being made for a mini-series. Fortunately almost half of it was cut out, so the tempo is slightly higher.

It is mainly the presence of Florence Pugh that convinced me to see the film. And actually no regrets. Outlaw King is freely accessible with the necessary action in it. Something between Game of Thrones and Tudors, but around the early 14th century. Historically it will be roughly correct, without the usual mistakes to keep it interesting as a film. The battle was somewhat reminiscent of the Golden Spurs Battle of 1302, in which the foot soldiers also managed to defeat the knights on horseback by luring the fight to the right place.

The film is mainly entertainment with some beautiful images of Scotland (although historically it should be full of trees), but it doesn't get any more than that. A lot better than Braveheart. For the enthusiasts, it will unfortunately never be memorable.
