I really liked it. Portrait of a man with an unstoppable urge to self-destruct. Nolte plays the stars of heaven and gives a strong performance as Wade Whitehouse, son of a violent alcoholic, who works left and right for the village where he lives. Until a man is killed during a hunting trip. Accident? Or...? Whitehouse becomes obsessed with the case, but it slowly alienates him from the entire community .
Schrader's film is more of a psychological drama than a thriller or detective. The various side stories are nicely explained, making the film a very solid impression and emotionally charged. Tragic story, sometimes surprising and with a threatening atmosphere from beginning to end, an atmosphere that is first and foremost radiated by Nolte himself.

Movie dad.

This drama-thriller about the self-destructive agent Nick Nolte is extremely atmospheric. He carries the film with verve. The story has little to do but manages to put the viewer on the wrong track several times. The real power, however, lies in the chats between Nolte and his film father James Coburn. The two actors are the main reasons to keep watching. Coburn deservedly won an Oscar. Willem Dafoe and Cissy Spacek are caught in supporting roles and as a result manage to make less of an impression.

Good.

It's all about Wade Whitehouse's character, played by Nick Nolte. Nolte does a great job, which also adds to the credibility of the character. Wade doesn't have everything under control, to say the least. There are a few things that are wrong on both a private and professional level. Nor is he taken seriously. A policeman from a small village, usually they still have some authority or prestige. He's not already. And with some roaring and screaming he won't get there either. It will depend on the bottle ...

Pathetic character. Hardly bonds with his daughter. Is totally inept and doesn't know how to behave. In front of no one, not even his father, girlfriend or ex.

Quite atmospheric, such a secluded peaceful community somewhere in the States, where everyone knows everyone. It ripples on. Not 100% convinced in terms of content, but some scenes were more than fine.
