Beautiful pictures and strong work by Sam Neill. But my goodness, what a soporific film this is. In the 1950s this would have resulted in a smooth, hour-long action western, but here a thin story is stretched to the extreme. In fact, after 90 minutes the story is actually over, but we have to hear it all again in the form of a lawsuit! An excellent film to catch your breath, but that's about it.

Many social studies teachers would like to show their students this type of film, but in this case they would do well to regularly check whether everyone is still awake. Wow, Mr. Thornton is moving at a snail's pace here. I know that slowness can be quite functional, but Sweet Country (wonderfully sarcastic title by the way) really teeters on the edge and really should have been more effective. A contemporary but not entirely successful variation on To Kill a Mockingbird, not really subtle and fairly predictable, but it can work as yet another proof that the world is unjust. Routines Neill and Brown play their roles adequately and almost with their eyes closed, which unfortunately also applies to protagonist Morris who seems to be sleepwalking while his character and the film would have worked better if his Sam had shown more feeling and emotion in the face of so much injustice. Too languid and lethargic to really appeal to the imagination, small enough for the brave attempt.

Good film in which an aboriginal is on trial for shooting a white man. An excellent Australian western that builds up quite slowly. Here and there a somewhat ominous atmosphere created by the lack of music and the short flashbacks and flashforwards. Of course also plenty of beautiful pictures of the Australian landscape. A small 3.5 stars.
