Came across this DVD by accident in France - a Malick film I hadn't seen yet, if not his first. And while I'm not very positive about Malick on average - especially because I have some trouble placing his work as a film - he is certainly one of the most interesting directors, because of his very special and very recognizable style.

In this first film it is much less emphatic, but the element of contemplation is certainly there. And the emphasis on perfectly beautiful images is also well reflected. Sheen and Spacek are also not only perfectly cast but also play perfectly, what a force majeure they show here. Therefore not only interesting from the point of view of Malick's debut, but also special as a film in itself. Much more of a traditional narrative, and to be honest, that suits me much better.

“I always wanted to be a criminal, I guess. Just not this big of a one.”

Terrence Malick's first film, and what a debut. Badlands is perhaps his best film, and especially the straight forward approach stands out. Malick is known today for his philosophical and spiritual films, but Badlands itself is a simple story about two young people on a murderous journey.

Kit (Sheen) is a friendly and charming young man at first glance, but he soon turns out to be a psychopath. The younger Holly (Spacek) is too young, too naive, too in love and ultimately too dependent to go against Kit. Kit's motives to kill remain unanswered, and it gives the character (and the film) something mysterious and nihilistic. The voice-over, the remarkably light music, the landscapes and the beautiful cinematography create a dreamy atmosphere, and the contrast with the murders is done very strongly by Malick.

I thought Martin Sheen convincingly portrayed that mentally less gifted and naive Kit here. Same for Sissy Spacek, by the way. This interspersed with beautiful images... so a great film.
