Pretty okay.

But the low scores are not really that surprising in themselves. Shimizu became known for his lo-fi horror films, but anyone entering this film with those expectations will be quite disappointed. Innocent Curse is indeed a horror film, but one that swaps scares and gore for atmosphere, primarily by adding some fantasy and drama elements.

The build-up and progression are not much different from the Japanese horror wave classics, with a curse that ultimately harbors a drama in the past, but Shimizu isn't really looking for pure fear. The central character is just a little too strange for that. A sort of Pied Piper figure who belongs more in a dark fantasy film. That is, in fact, a much better way to approach this Innocent Curse.

It is certainly atmospheric, visually very polished, and in terms of acting, definitely not the worst. It might be just a little too long and the polish isn't that of a great director, but otherwise it is a nice variation on a familiar theme. And that variation is certainly welcome, because how many Ju-On films can you make...

3.5*
