David Tennant visibly relishes his role as the intelligent, manipulative kidnapper/murderer who makes life miserable for Sean Falco [Robert Sheehan], an aspiring photographer who earns some money from burglaries and accidentally discovers that Cale Erendreich [Tennant] is torturing a young woman and locked up in his villa. Sean half-heartedly informs the police, fearing being arrested for burglary himself, but the result is only that Erendreich is determined to find out who tried to frame him and "correct" the person in question.

The screenplay makes clever use of the technological possibilities of smartphones (Erendreich can control cameras, lighting and equipment with his phone) and is full of clever twists that you would expect from a good psycho-thriller. Unfortunately, despite an unexpected humorous moment, the finale is quite conventional, but that doesn't detract from this well-written and acted, suspense thriller.

I'm new here at Moviemeter and I just wanted to take the opportunity to say something about this movie. Saw it in theaters yesterday and it's worth its 6.3 on IMDb. Maybe even overrated.

Especially the line Kerry Condon says to Sheehan when she knocks out her hostage taker Tennant: 'That's how you save someone!' totally ruined the movie for me. This totally didn't fit into the moment and completely took the intensity (if there was any) off it. A misguided attempt at some comic relief.

A film full of plot holes, very predictable and a lot of overacting, especially by Tennant and Sheehan. I expected much more from Tennant as a psychopath, but I was disappointed with his performance. A little too forced in my opinion. The film also leaves some loose ends. For example, how is it going with Riley?
All in all, after seeing the trailer and the cast, I expected more from this movie.

Dominate or be dominated?

Bad Samaritan seems to be a nice thriller about a killer with a derailed bondage addiction. It was just a shame that the film almost burst with unbelievable things, and pulled out an ending so full of clichés that the strong intent quickly went out.

It was also a shame that there was not more clear about the relationship between Katie and Cale. Why was she held captive, and the other woman in his house not? You don't watch titles like this because of their depth, but it's one of the things you'll notice if you're already so annoyed by the rest. This already started when Cale managed to convert his torture chamber back into a regular room in no time and the semi-exciting moments such as the moment when Sean suddenly discovers a bomb when he is in Cale's house, which he can of course just escape from.

Cat and mouse games often appeal to me, but then it has to be better thought out and not such a mixed bag as this boring, unbelievable affair is. Tennant's game was captivating, and the film did have some fun, standalone moments, where the build-up in particular makes curious, but overall it is far from convincing.

2.0*
