Het Leven Is Vurrukkulluk plot

During a lovely spring day, the two best friends, Mees (Reinout Scholten van Aschat) and Boelie (Géza Weisz) are together in the Vondelpark. What seems to be a normal day changes when they meet the young and handsome Panda (Romy Louise Lauwers). Where the heat in the Vondelpark seems to be rising, it is lacking with the long-married couple Etta and Ernst-Jan. Ernst-Jan suspects Etta of adultery and has his own ideas about how to catch her. In the last love story, the paths of Rosa and Kees, old lovers, unexpectedly cross again after decades. Careful as a beautiful Amsterdam spring day, their love seems to blossom again.

It took Frans Weisz a lot of time and effort to get this film on the silver screen. It is a pity that, apart from the cinematography and the acting of Reinout Scholten van Aschat, it has become a particularly bad film. The film is set in the 1950s... but emphatically not. People with mobile phones, skaters, Goths, transsexuals and a club that does Tae Bo: it makes no sense and it adds nothing. Perhaps there is a connection with the fact that the whole film is a kind of flashback in which the old Boelie [Remco Campert] looks back on the time when he [Geza Weisz, who does not show any acting talent] with his best friend Mees [Scholten van Aschat ] ran into a young Flemish slut named Panda [Romy Lauwers] in the Vondelpark. There is sex, there is a very present jazz score (by Theo Nijland, who could have spent his time better on his own screenplay) and a few more storylines that I couldn't make much of. Elsie de Brauw gives an abysmal performance as Boelie's alcoholic mother in this mess of a film. In any case, we will find out where Sinterklaas is hiding. Delightful? Well no, but this shit sucks.

Haven't read the book yet and picked it up at the thrift store where I work. I definitely thought this one could be done.

What becomes a bit of a strange story is the time frame in which this film takes place. On the one hand, it very much resembles the 50s or 60s, the time difference between the black-and-white images and the present cannot be seen in the main characters and in the Vondelpark you see contemporary things passing by every now and then (laptops, smartphones, styles which did not exist at that time). Did it by accident or on purpose? Or was there too little budget?

Minus.

Nevertheless, this is an entertaining film with its charms. Panda is an intriguing but mysterious Belgian girl who overwhelms the two clumsy students Mees and Boellie (and even the bum Kees) and drags them into the sunny adventures in and around the Vondelpark. The film is certainly summery and atmospheric and the crass characters (take Mees' mother for example) are also liked. The story around Kees and the fact that his old love turns out to be very close also makes for a smile. The Jazz soundtracks also strengthened the atmosphere.

Life is Vurrukkulluk has nevertheless become a sympathetic Dutch film that wants to resemble the old Dutch blockbusters and that also "almost" succeeds. Weisz could have been a little more careful with the zeitgeist.

Anyway, whatever...

Now take a look at the book.

3.5*

What a failure. And that music? Vurschrukkuk. The only bright spot: natural nudity. That again.
