Strong story about friendship and having to resign yourself to what you want in life, but can no longer do. There are no really great actors, but they act very well and very believable. It is a small film with a slow story but exactly that, which belongs to the film. I certainly enjoyed it.

The Rider

Excellent movie. It's hard to believe that this is only Chloé Zhao's second film. The first thing you notice about The Rider is the brilliant cinematography. Possibly the most beautiful movie to watch this year, and the American Midwest has almost never looked more beautiful. The story around Brady is also well put together, and you are slowly drawn into the lives of Brady and his family. It is sometimes painful to watch, but also very realistic and human. Fantastic acting by Jandreau, for whom it is his first film. The story slowly ripples along, and the beautiful images almost make you dream away.

Undoubtedly a wonderful drama. It has been a family project and - contrary to what the credits tell us - it is indeed based on a true story. The most important players play themselves in the film: the father, a slightly retarded sister, the friend of the protagonist who is completely paralyzed in a wheelchair and of course the protagonist himself. Also special: one of the most beautiful scenes from the film in which Brady manages to tame a wild horse until he can ride it is not acted. It happened by chance while the film crew was there and they filmed it. Beautiful. The love Brady has for his family, for horses and for riding rodeo is not played out and that is how it comes across. Combine that with the beautiful images of South Dakota and you know you are watching something special. It is sometimes a bit raw and unpolished, but very realistic. It gives a glimpse into a culture that I am not familiar with. Unfortunately, it is not a film without mistakes. The movie is slow. Sometimes a little too slow for me. The story is a bit thin. Also, I wasn't completely 'taken in' by the film: I remained fully aware that I am an outsider who gets a glimpse of this North American cowboy (macho) culture from our cinema room. It didn't get me IN that culture like some movies do. Despite that, it's definitely worth watching if you're not allergic to slower movies. And I think some interest in North American culture also helps a bit. Well deserved 3.5 stars.
