Episodic film about the lack of what screenwriter/director Ruben Östlund sees as 'humanity'. Östlund makes his point early in the film, even having it spoken literally by the over-enthusiastic creators of an advertising campaign for the Stockholm museum curated by Christian [Claes Bang]. The lack of dramatic build-up and cluttered structure regularly slacks attention in a film that has three particularly successful scenes: a scene in a square where a woman calls for help because her husband threatens to kill her, a confrontation between an employee [Christopher Læssø] by Christian with a 12-year-old boy [an outstanding Elijandro Edouard] who is seeking redress because Christian has accused him in a letter (indirectly and wrongly) of theft and a 'performance' during a dinner in a restaurant where the artist [Mikael Olsson] explores the limits of humanity in a confrontational and unforgettable way. But there is nothing that justifies the excessive playing time - a regrettable trend in films that score high at Cannes.

A very fun and beautiful film. It is somewhat reminiscent of Nocturnal Animals (2016) - MovieMeter.nl (a film I absolutely loved) because this film also has a character in the somewhat decadent art world that is confronted with the raw 'real' reality, also with regard to himself. The film focuses on the loss of trust and care in our society – everyone mistrusts everyone and we leave beggars to die – and on our hypocrisy about it. In particular, he criticizes the moral hypocrisy of the progressive elite – the Gutmensch – but also his self-image as a non-conformist and avant-garde (like a director of a modern art museum) when in fact he is completely conformist: the film keeps so precisely the typical viewer of this film a confrontational mirror.

Above all, almost every scene is captivating – recognizable and original at the same time – and the story remains quite exciting for all 142 minutes. The film is not perfect – the film does not score optimally in terms of coherence and credibility – but it is also one of the best films of 2017.

The Square is a fairly fragmentary film with themes such as art, media and charity at its core. The broad outlines are worth thinking about. What is art? How far can you go with free speech? What do you understand by charity? Things that make you think, but haven't worked out (and shouldn't). The decoration and the stories in the sidelines are quite interesting. Some times better than others. But usually it dies quickly. The result is a mosaic with a red thread that ripples quite a bit. As if the filmmaker had some beautiful fragments in mind, but didn't really know how to put them together and also fills them here and there with slightly less fascinating scenes. But the humor is strong and it looks good. A good film, although you notice that there was more potential in it.
