To spice up their waning marriage, Anne and Bob, a wealthy American couple with all the right connections, move to a mansion in romantic Paris. While Anne is preparing a particularly luxurious dinner for their sophisticated international circle of friends, she discovers that there are thirteen guests. In a fit of panic, she urges her loyal domestic helper Maria to pose as a mysterious Spanish noblewoman in order to get an even number. But a little too much wine and some teasing flirtation causes Maria to accidentally fall in love with a British dandy and art auctioneer. Their budding romance will force Anne to chase her help through Paris, eventually niping this most unexpected and joyous love affair in the bud.
