Eight Stunden Sind Kein Tag revolves around a family and the social problems of workers in the early 1970s. The protagonists represent three generations, whose outlook on life varies from progressive to conservative. Jochen and his fiancée Maria live a normal and quiet life. Jochen works as a tool maker. He is strongly influenced by his colleagues when it comes to norms and values, especially with the arrival of guest workers in their industry. Maria works in the advertising department of a newspaper, in her work she is also confronted daily with urban problems such as housing shortage and education. They would like to get married, but in addition to the influence of colleagues and friends, their family also ensures that they hardly have time to be together and to shape their lives. Especially their vital and extraordinarily wise grandmother Krüger and her new boyfriend Gregor and Jochen's sister Monika cause the necessary problems.
