This has to be one of the worst edited movies I've seen in ages. There really is something completely wrong with the pacing and timing of this movie. Although the soundtrack suggests that the film is nice and smooth, that is rarely the case. Very strange choice of shots that are far too long or too short, in terms of timing the film is invariably far off. Including countless scenes that really don't go anywhere; from scenes on Tinder to an exchangeable couple wanting to order something to eat. At one point, Cate Blanchett gets on her motorcycle. The next shot, she's walking across a zebra crossing in completely different clothes. Rarely do you see such a completely illogical mess.

Perhaps the muddled editing is to compensate for the slightly too simple premise. It's never really a punishment to watch the performance of a heist film, but Sandra Bullock and her team's plan is nowhere exciting or special; it actually means nothing on all levels. In fact, the film goes on quietly for the entire two hours, each slightly entertaining moment invariably interspersed with a lot of uninteresting posturing. The job is so easy, there are hardly any setbacks and half of the team has no added value. Cate Blanchett plays a big part, but her character doesn't really do the whole movie. Of the entire team, Rihanna may have the best role. She and cartoon character Helena Bonham Carter have at least somewhat colorful characters, the rest is remarkably dull.

2 stars.

“If you're going to have a problem with stealing, then you're not going to like the rest of this conversation.”

Smooth heist film with an excellent cast full of famous actresses. Ocean's Eight clearly lacks Soderbergh's direction and style choices, and it comes a little too easily for the ladies. Bullock was a bit flat to me as Debbie Ocean, Danny's sister. But luckily you always have Cate Blanchett who makes everything better. And Awkwafina, Paulson, Hathaway and Rihanna (yes really) are on a roll too. The final heist is also well put together, and Gary Ross manages to provide some tense moments here.

Mediocre spin-off.

And then it's not even that somewhat forced female perspective that this film offers. Not that it adds much, but it doesn't really bother either, most actresses are skilled enough for that (unlike a Ghostbusters, for example).

But the lame script and the extremely mediocre direction do dishonor to Soderbergh's trilogy (we'll leave the original out of consideration for a moment, since this film rides more on Soderbergh's films). The heist itself is pretty brash (a couch was too "boring"...so why don't we put a jewel in a museum?) and Ross doesn't manage to get anywhere near the light-heartedness of the earlier films.

Fortunately, the pace is fast enough and there are some scenes here and there that make it quite watchable. Unfortunately they can't save the film, but they make sure it's not a total disaster. The problem with these kinds of movies is ultimately not all the sex whining, but that untalented Hollywood junk just isn't good enough.

2.0*
