"Obedientia. Paupertas."
The nuns Alessandra, Fernanda and Genevra lead a simple life in their monastery. They regularly scold the farmer, who works in the field, until he can no longer tolerate it and flees. Reverend Tommasso then takes on the new servant Massetto. This one is a virile young servant who is forced into hiding. To discourage any temptation from the sisters, he has to pretend to be a deaf-mute. Massetto struggles to maintain this lie as the oppressed nunnery erupts into a whirlwind of sexuality, drug abuse and revelry.

Satirical comedy loosely based on Boccaccio's 14th century book Decameron begins with a scene in which three nuns insult a gardener in modern terms. No, it's not subtle at all and apparently the credo 'the coarser the better' applies to Baena. Aubrey Plaza clearly feels like a fish out of water with this irreverent material, but Brie and Micucci are considerably less convincing. Baena tries too hard to shock the audience, but his unsubtle approach leaves you rather indifferent. John C. Reilly is amusing as the priest who often turns a blind eye to everything that happens around him.

I couldn't identify the title, but I still enjoyed this nunsploitation satire or whatever it is, set in the Middle Ages with so to speak 'contemporary' dialogues. Typically American, but funny at times. Although the film often slumps and you have to wait until something nice comes along again. That got a bit boring and therefore not enough. It could have been a bit sexier and rougher, but the Americans apparently didn't dare to do that.

Oh well, Boccaccio.
This was quite a sensation at the time when the series 'Decamerone' based on his stories came on TV - in the late 70s and early 80s. I don't remember much about it, but I think we would call it pulp now if we forgot who the director was again. Perhaps something like Emanuelle - at the same time and with just about the same amount of nudity, and which, with today's glasses, we would judge as fairly innocent.
This film dutifully repeats that, but it is also slightly better, because the production values are on a completely different level and so is the cast - an almost perfect cast with the three horny nuns of Brie, Plaza and Micucci, the hero of the film. story Dave Franco, who turns out to be a much better actor than brother James. And then John C. Reilly as Father Tommasso.
The fact that the script actually makes no sense despite its historical and literary origins makes little difference - because it jumps from one absurdly hilarious situation to the next. The fact that the humor is very situational and subtle only makes it all the more fun for me. Just like the very beautiful images and edifyingly matching monastery music, it all just fits.
