I really liked that choreography. The opening scene with a robbery on Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's Bell Bottom (and never going into the bank with the camera for a moment) and a little further on when Baby goes for coffee, after those two scenes I was completely done and I was sitting with a big smile to look. This indeed has nothing to do with epilepsy-inducing clips (which by the way have not been shown on MTV for about 15 years, there are students who can hardly imagine that MTV used to broadcast (almost) no boring reality shows but music) , but rather refers to musicals from the studio era. But then with classic rock on the soundtrack and just a little less emphatically.

In addition, the dialogues were often really nice and the film is wonderfully cast. Elgort carries the film with playful ease, but is flanked by crooks who are bold, but just not too much. I wouldn't play all of the colorful, varied rock soundtrack at home (not even the two Dutch songs by Focus and Golden Earring), but I thought it fit perfectly in the film. And that smile got so big that I didn't even have a problem with that slightly too stretched and too happy ending. Anyway: Wright seems like a movie buff to me and there were plenty of such endings under the Hays code. In short: loving popcorn entertainment. A film with a heart and above all a lot of fun.

4.0*

And oh yes: Jon Spencer (the one from Bell Bottom) has another cameo at the end of the film...

When I saw a trailer for this a while back, my first reaction was that it really looked like a terrible bolt movie. Still, I read good reviews, positive stories from friends and colleagues, and Edgar Wright isn't a complete cookie cutter either. I wasn't really convinced, but during a long flight with very few alternatives it happened. And, I'm sorry to report, but my first reaction turned out to be completely justified. An incredibly gimmicky film with a weak story, flat board figures who think they are too cool, some stupid robberies and chases, it was a film long annoyance. The only positive thing I can think of is the music that does have some nice songs, and maybe the setting I watched it in wasn't optimal for a movie like this. But still, Baby Driver spontaneously made me itchy. Friends and colleagues in question have some explaining to do, from now on I will listen even harder to my own first impression.

The film stores like the well-known pincers of those animals we have too many of. The chase scenes in particular were unbelievable, I take that seriously for a film called Baby Driver. The main function of the protagonist is that the camera has something to center on, because otherwise it is both literally and figuratively a meaningless figure.
