The Discovery plot
It is a year after it has been scientifically proven that the afterlife really exists. This has resulted in millions of people taking their own lives in order to travel to the afterlife. Will, the son of its discoverer, then falls in love with Isla, a woman haunted by a tragic past.

New McDowell.
One that, like his previous film, is conceptually drowning. In the beginning it is all quite intriguing (although also a bit simplistic), but as it becomes clear where the fillm actually wants to go, my interest quickly started to weaken.
Maybe it's because at McDowell I think it's a shame that sci-fi is being misused to kickstart a dramatic story. I don't think that's such a good setup, especially when the drama is rather whiny. I think I prefer my sci-fi pure, or these kind of projects need a better director.
Despite that, visually, this film is fine. Beautifully portrayed. The soundtrack is decent, but is a bit let down by the rather angular and lifeless dialogues, which become part of the atmosphere. It seems that McDowell wants to give the film some extra depth, but that is not the case.
The last half hour is a lot less. Too bad because it started out okay.

Definitely a movie that holds your attention. If you like these quasi-parapsychological themes, this is definitely a movie to watch. It is one of those stories that you can't figure out mentally, but which still make you think and continue to intrigue you even after the film. Definitely one of the better Netflix movies.

I can always lose myself in these kinds of movies.
Of course I see that the quality could be better and the cast was not too strong. But the plot is darn original and intriguing.
I hope McDowell makes more movies. *3.5
