The Pearl of Africa plot
An anti-gay law was introduced in Uganda in 2014; homosexuals risk life and even execution. In mass demonstrations citizens fiercely turned against other orientations. For Cleopatra Kambugu, her homeland – once called 'The Pearl of Africa' by Winston Churchill for its wonderful diversity – is therefore a dangerous place: she was born a man, but in the process of becoming a woman. With the support of part of her family and her friend Nelson, she undertakes the physically and emotionally grueling journey to another body. The filmmaker follows the ever (happy) courageous Cleo and her devoted life companion on this journey, exposing the special relationship between the two, as well as their inner struggle.
