Owning Mahowny plot

"To some it's a game. To others it's a habit. But to Dan Mahowny -- beating the odds is everything"

Dan Mahowny is a nondescript Toronto bank manager. He lives modestly, drives a used car and has a relationship with Belinda; a sweet, inconspicuous girl who also works at the bank. No one knows that Mahowny leads a double life. He has a gambling problem... His position at the bank allows him to embezzle millions from his employers to finance his needs. His bosses and clients have a rock-solid faith in the dull, but decent Mahowny. Casino boss Foss finds the perfect customer in Mahowny. Belinda, however, continues to hope for a joint, romantic future. Mahowny's nocturnal adventures increasingly take over and his behavior attracts the attention of the police. How long can Mahowny continue to indulge his gambling appetite without getting caught? Owning Mahowny is based on the true story of the largest one-man bank fraud in Canadian history.

Mahowny's gambling addiction is one of a heavy caliber. The bank fraud at his employer to pay for this expensive hobby makes things from bad to worse. Mahowny's double life reaches far, but eventually finds its demise. Seymour doesn't play, but is Dan. The sigh is so convincing and palpable that you just start to empathize with his addiction. The black humor that accompanies this astonishing acting makes this crime drama a strong film.

A carefully and stylishly shot drama in which a bank employee carries out all kinds of illegal acts in order to eventually pay off his debt in a casino. The excellent casting, the smooth camera work and the - again passionate - role of Hoffman lift the whole thing to a higher level. Since there are not that many metamorphoses ready, the script could easily have been killed, but I was continuously fascinated. Where's the rest of Kwietniowski..?

The fact that Philip Seymour Hoffman would die in 2014 as a result of heroin addiction makes this film extra fascinating in a somewhat morbid way. He plays a bank employee who uses his position and the trust placed in him to embezzle millions of dollars to finance his gambling addiction. Hoffman paints a convincing portrait of someone who, despite his extremely excessive gambling behavior, is in a complete state of denial and as a result works himself deeper and deeper into trouble. How he gets his money is less easy to follow for laymen and an excess of supporting characters is sometimes a bit confusing, but Hoffman's craftsmanship makes this worthwhile. You do wonder if he was already drawing on his own experience back then...
