I sometimes had to think of Goodfellas when I saw this film, both in terms of content and because of the soundtrack. Scorsese's film is better, more in-depth too, but War Dogs is great entertainment. Nice insight into a true story (so you already know the ending, otherwise this story would never have come up) and the trade in weapons. Quite superficial, but with enough content to at least tell a clear story. Also well played by Teller and Hill, both very annoying at times, but now doable. They never get really funny, but they do have chemistry and that makes a big difference. What also stands out is the excellent soundtrack (did I hear Fortunate Son again?) and unlike Suicide Squad, also overflowing with great songs, there is now a connection between image and music and this does have an effect. 3.5*.

Plenty of entertainment.

A comedy drama based on a true story. You have to know that last one to be able to believe it. Sometimes the truth is crazier than fiction. This is also the case here, when two twenty-somethings decide to become arms dealers and to supply the American government. The statement "Only in America" is in full force here. It makes for an entertaining story with a sympathetic Miles Teller and an unpredictable Jonah Hill. We know the last actor in particular from many comedies. As well as director Todd Philips, who is responsible for The Hangover trilogy, among others.

The comic relief is more than welcome in this strange adventure, but it makes the film even more balanced than it already is. The humor saves a lot, but laughter is not in it. The film is far too serious for that. Strangely enough, especially when it comes to the relationship between Teller and the beautiful Ana de Armas. It therefore seems a bit as if the director did not know which path to take. A misplaced Bradley Cooper plus a strange twist - the real story had to follow of course - don't help either, but in general War Dogs offers enough entertainment.

Good.

Thanks to Warner Bros. for the review copy.

Fine.

In fact, War Dogs is the best Phillips has come up with yet. I normally don't need to know anything about his comedies, but War Dogs runs a little smoother. Yet the relatively brutal humor mixed with such a serious subject is not quite the ideal combination, including here.

Reminds me a bit of Lord of War in terms of story, but that example is a lot sharper and harder than War Dogs who describe the situation in a more comical way. way view. Moreover, Lord of War is visually much better put together for a film that was released 11 years earlier.

Still, War Dogs doesn't look bad visually either. Solid cinematography and solid editing ensure a smooth film. The 114 minutes tick by, it really feels like a 90 minute movie. Phillips knows exactly how to get the viewer through his film as smoothly as possible and this is the first time I've seen him do that.

Hill is doing very well, despite sometimes trying too hard to be the funny type. He has to take care of the comedy a bit, but sometimes does a little too much for it than necessary. That smile, for example, just doesn't fit. Teller also does a reasonable job but does not manage to carry the film by a long way. They do well as a duo.

The film is long busy with the rise part but when it comes to fall everything goes through very quickly. As if there was a lot of rush with the writing. The film sometimes feels a bit messy, but the fast pace partly obscures that. Furthermore, the film has quite strong moments, but just a bit too forced comedy and moral elements. I also think this is Phillips' best film in terms of direction, but the content is still not very perfect.
