Der Amerikanische Freund plot

The Hamburg frame maker Jonathan Zimmerman is told that he suffers from leukemia. Tom Ripley, an American art dealer, who conducts a shady trade in fake paintings between New York and Hamburg takes advantage of this. He puts Zimmerman in touch with one of his mafia friends. He offers Zimmerman a quarter of a million if he is willing to shoot a mobster in Paris. With this money he would leave his wife and children in good shape. Zimmerman accepts the offer, unaware that he will be plunged into a nightmare of betrayal and deception.

This film was the first adaptation of "Ripley's game" ... yes indeed, the talented Mr Ripley. Here it is Dennis Hopper who takes on the role of the hateful manipulator. As in all Ripley film adaptations, he is presented quite sympathetically, especially when he seems to regret involving the terminally ill Jonathan Zimmerman in a number of mafia-linked murder assignments. It is never very clear why this should happen and no explanation is given.

American Freund is primarily a psychological thriller. However, the film sheds more light on the character of Zimmerman, excellently played by an anguished Bruno Ganz. Some scenes are really strong; the subway scene and train scene were exciting and masterfully constructed. The decoration was also nice: many cityscapes of Paris and Hamburg that enhance the atmosphere. And everything else seems to fit together nicely.

Only at the end, with that ambulance, things went a bit out of hand. A bit of a nasty scene where the thugs are taken out And then that injured man in the ambulance : I'm assuming this was one of the men who got thrown from the train and survived, after which the mob might have gone to get him out of the clinic and in that attempt stole an ambulance . Wenders is not immediately a director that I would spontaneously watch, but I thought this was more than successful.

Reasonable film about a man who has only a short life to live and becomes involved with the mafia. Rather long-winded and for the fairly simple plot, the film goes on for too long. Nice location work gives the whole a certain atmosphere. The two best scenes are clearly the two murders that are portrayed in detail.

Crime drama begins as the character study of frame-maker Jonathan Zimmerman [Bruno Ganz], who struggles with health issues. Although his attending physician keeps asking him to await examinations, Jonathan is approached by the mysterious Raoul Minot [Gérard Blain] who says "to be sure" that Jonathan does not have long to live. Raoul offers Jonathan a huge sum of money in exchange for one, possibly two liquidations.

Starts out as a character study but gradually unfolds as a mystery and eventually a thrilling action thriller. A true nail biter with excellent playing by Ganz and Hopper (as the American friend from the title) and impressive camera work by Robby Müller. This requires some patience from the viewer, but it is highly rewarded. Directors Samuel Fuller and Nicholas Ray have small roles, and Wenders himself appears as a fully bandaged patient in an ambulance.
