The Jerk plot
"A rags to riches to rags story."
Navin (Martin) is a supernaive young man with a heart of gold who grows up in a black family in Mississippi. When he hears on his eighteenth birthday that he has been adopted, he decides to go out into the wide world. Soon people take advantage of his goodness, but Navin sees nothing wrong with it. By sheer coincidence, he becomes the inventor of a spectacle case, becomes filthy rich, and changes from good-natured to arrogant asshole.

Nice film in which a young man decides to go out into the world and make the best of it. Fragmentary, but entertaining. Nice silly humor that is often bland and funny at the same time. For Steve Martin, this film marked his first leading role.

How a fool still manages to get far, that's what The Jerk is about. It is a Forrest Gump avant la lettre, but very mediocre. The jokes are of a shitty level and you can see it coming from afar. It's all very bland, but I couldn't find it really annoying because of the good-natured character of Steve Martin.

This movie had been on my list for a while, but strangely enough, I hadn't gotten around to watching it before.
Steve Martin is on a roll and the movie has a nice speed that doesn't really get boring anywhere.
Had a good laugh a few times at this slap stick like movie that crams more into 95 minutes than a similar movie in 2 hours.
