Hrútar plot

"This Winter Get Sheepish"

In a remote valley in Iceland, Gummi and Kiddi live side by side, tending their sheep. Their ancestral flock of sheep is considered some of the best in the country and the two brothers have been awarded several times for their award-winning rams, which carry an ancient pedigree. Although they share a land and a way of life, Gummi and Kiddi haven't spoken to each other in forty years. When a deadly disease suddenly infects Kiddi's sheep, the entire valley is threatened. The authorities decide to cull all animals in the area to contain the outbreak.

Beautiful movie. Subtle character drawing of two stiff-headed brothers, but both with love and pride for their animals.
Very neat setting with beautiful, atmospheric imaging.
Simple in the explanation too, with a suitable soundtrack and in view of the very special tension between the brothers, now and then a layer of humor is added.
Hats off to both actors by the way.
The final scene gives us the idea that what man shows outwardly does not always reflect what is inside.

Two sheep-keeping brothers who haven't spoken to each other for 40 years and the outbreak of a contagious sheep disease. That sounds dramatic and it is. Although the drama is linked with wisps of dry humor, it is always the tragic elements of the story that predominate.

The relationship between the two brothers, who also live within walking distance of each other, is characterized by incomprehension, cold antipathy and silence. The story of the brothers is a story of small incidents, of grumpy looks and of a great love for sheep.

The setting in rugged Iceland is beautiful. The vastness is enormous. Completely in contrast to this is the story about both brothers. Their mutual rivalry and struggle takes place on a minimalistic level and produces an oppressive atmosphere within that spatial landscape. The events glide by very calmly and in detail. The threat of sheep disease, the meddling of the authorities and the unpredictable behavior of the brothers ensure that the calm cadence of the story never stops and is provided with a nice layer of tension.

Director and writer Grímur Hákonarson would rather let the images do the talking than let his characters speak. Lots of atmosphere. Little action. The Icelanders have no taste for feel-good cinema. This film is not about a harmonious pursuit or a happy ending. It's about existential things. Man and his relationship to nature. Man and his relationship to another. Man and his relationship to himself.

And all this at a leisurely pace with many silent moments in a beautiful rough landscape that reflects the raw emotions that the characters express among themselves.

Beautiful.

Film about two Icelandic sheep brothers who live somewhere remote in the rugged landscape. Right next to each other, but they haven't talked to each other in 40 years. The film builds up very slowly with beautiful images and sparse dialogues. The story in the film also seems to barely get going for a long time. But it's an interesting film nonetheless. And with the story it will definitely work out in the end and the open ending may seem unsatisfactory but it is appropriate.
