Black plot

'Black' tells the raw story of fifteen-year-old Mavela – black and member of the dreaded Brussels youth gang “Black Bronx”. She is brutally forced to choose between loyalty and love when she falls head over heels in love with a Moroccan boy from the rival gang “1080”. But one thing Mavela quickly learns: “Once a gang member, always a gang member; you'll never get away from the Black Bronx.”

16+ this movie, no idea why. Some tits are shown, but otherwise this is not all that shocking. And with such subjects, the news is also allowed to that age category if that is what it is all about.

Furthermore, a nice insight into that Brussels world with the consequences of years of failing policy, shot in a particularly atmospheric way with well-fitting music. Also clever how the sympathy of the black group went towards the immigrant group. Well, a little, because I would prefer to press a lot of those hopeless people against a wall and slowly rub their faces against it. Irritating people who think they are a lot but just have to work and don't fall into a victim role.

The film's problem, however, is Romeo and Juliet themselves. In the beginning, I think he is an insufferably annoying bastard. He then gets some sympathy (especially because the other group is even crazier) but has already forfeited all his credits. Although that whole thing that he wants to get out is so chewed up by now. And with her, great role, I never understood why she's with all those crazy people. And so I could never really go along with the movie because the central story lacked the credibility, my attention and my sympathy. Perhaps the film deserves a higher rating for its positive points, but not today. 1.5*.

Intense movie. Brussels as the backdrop to the battle between two rival gangs. In which a Romeo & Juliet story unfolds between Mavela, member of the Black Bronx, and Marwan, member of the 1080'ers (and where this postcode stands for Molenbeek). Perhaps the Romeo & Juliet story is also referred to when Marwan, during his interrogation at the police station, playfully tells that he was reading Shakespeare (as an alibi).

Strong and lifelike acted story of people who do terrible things to other people. Nice how the gang mechanisms - peer pressure - are exposed.

All this skillfully portrayed by the directing duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. I do like how they occasionally assemble real time lapses in the story at an accelerated pace, I also noticed at Patser (2018) - MovieMeter .nl. The latter film also tells a crime story, but there it is all a bit more palatable because a comedy element has been added. Black, on the other hand, is anything but comedy but bitter seriousness. As a viewer you have to be able to withstand a portion of horrific (because realistic) violence, up to gang rape. Obviously not a film that makes you happy, but the director duo has brought the subject in an honest way in my opinion. A film that had to be made once. Beautiful final shot by the way, a kind of choreography of hushed violence.

A raw film whose common thread is a romantic relationship between two teenagers, each of whom is a member of rival gangs in a suburb of Brussels. You can feel the violent confrontation between the gangs coming long in advance. That does not detract from the fact that prior to that climax it is a fascinating psychodrama with first-rate acting by the two young protagonists.

This film is much better than the messy Patser (2018) that El Arbi and Fallah made next.
