I thought it was a reasonable film, if you go into it with the idea that it is a B-movie. The story is wafer thin, but the tension is there. By the way, it is more of a thriller than a horror. The final reveal of the monster is a bit disappointing. Not scary. But that's also part of a B-movie. The cliffhanger is a nice detail.

This horror film didn't do much for me, despite the fact that this film had quite a good build-up of tension with very appropriate dark music, but towards the end I had the feeling: I've seen this so many times. I thought it was good that we only got to fully see the monster at the end, although that wasn't new either. See the movie Cloverfield. The monster didn't look too good either. Perhaps it would have been better not to show the monster in all its glory., but only the legs.

Calmly constructed, effective monster horror that proves that a film does not have to rely solely on expensive computer effects or noisy scares. In fact, once the CGI is taken out of the closet, the film experiences its weakest points. Kevin Durand does an excellent job in the leading role and the supporting characters act equally convincingly, although the side drama makes for a somewhat slow start. The more substantive layers are not the elements that a film like Dark Was the Night should have, but the atmospheric images are extremely infectious. The build-up to the finale is certainly exciting and in between director Jack Heller takes plenty of beauty out of the environment. The cinematography looks well thought out and the play with light makes a positive contribution. You have to have the patience to become invested in this world, but if you do, you are in for a nice and atmospheric horror film.
