"Keep your enemies close."
Boston, 1970s. FBI agent John Connolly tries to persuade Irish mobster Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp), the brother of Senator William M. Bulger, to collaborate with the FBI in order to take down an Italian mob family . Whitey agrees, but the unlikely partnership doesn't go as planned and Whitey becomes one of the most notorious and violent criminals Boston has known.

Good film about a criminal who has free rein when he becomes an informant for the FBI. This rather standard crime drama is based on a true story that took place in the 1970s and 1980s. Solid, but predictable and the film doesn't really excel at anything. It will certainly remain entertaining, because there is enough happening. A cast with quite a few famous names with a great lead role by Johnny Depp.

Good mafia movie. I sometimes had some trouble with the names to follow who was who, but otherwise ok. 2 hours past. The fact that it actually happened gives something extra. Depp delivers good acting here and is something different than a drunken pirate... Seen better mafia films, such as Irishmen, but this one is also worth it. Not a waste of time.
Just under 4*, hence 3.5* for me. Also a round of applause for grime because what they have done with Depp may also have been seen...

Good mafia picture.
Depp cleverly portrays the shrewd and ruthless mobster Bulger. Understated and fiery. Thoughtful and unpredictable. But he may also do so in a carefully created setting. And his fellow players generally offer a good match.
Not everywhere is Black Mass equally credible. For example, it takes an unhealthy amount of gullibility at the police station to take the story that far. But despite that, the scenario remains fairly faithful to the true facts.
Sometimes exciting, sometimes brutal and sometimes surprising. But constantly entertaining and interesting.
