Rita Hayworth is Sadie Thompson, an exuberant woman who loves life. She arrives on an island in Southeast Asia, where she stays until her boat leaves for Sidney. The local Marines are thrilled with this woman, who loves to sing, drink and is just a nice woman. Also on the island is Alfred Davidson (Jose Ferrer), a strict missionary who keeps the island and its inhabitants in a spiritual stranglehold. As Sadie interacts more and more with the Marines (particularly Phil O'Hara), her and Davidson's relationship becomes more and more explosive when he discovers Sadie's real reason for wanting to go to Australia.

Hayworth is very good as the cheerful/loose woman with a secret. Aldo Ray (as O'Hara) and Charles Bronson, in an early role, are also good.

The problem is that it is all too predictable and the songs that Sadie sings are not really easy to listen to (not bad, but not good either).

Entertaining film by Bernhardt (who made the much better Possessed).

A small 3*

Rita Hayworth gives an excellent performance as Sadie Thompson in a role previously played by none other than Gloria Swanson and Joan Crawford. The scenes in the café are quite daring, but the underlying eroticism is unfortunately hampered by a few unnecessary songs. Aldo Ray gives a good performance as the soldier who hopes to win over Sadie, but Ferrer is a bit stiff as the clergyman who resists his increasing desire for Sadie. Where's Walter Huston when you need him?

a missionary who is a bit too religiously fanatical and goes crazy and wants to impose his morals on a woman he accuses of prostitution.

Hayworth plays her role well as the seductive woman who ends up on an island full of young men and of course gets all the male attention she wants.

It is funny to see the reaction of the doctor's and the missionary's wives in particular, who are both elderly, their passive hostility is telling for the jealous woman who is past her prime.

To be fair, Rita was already past her prime in terms of looks, but still attractive to look at.
