Surprisingly good Dutch film. Well constructed, well played and unpredictable. Maybe not brilliant but definitely more than worth a look!

Solid, exciting crime film from our own soil. It is rather silly that part of the MM audience makes it a habit to invariably drill a Dutch film into the ground as a matter of automaticity. Good to know that people abroad generally think a lot more nuanced about this.

This is also the case with this film, which can withstand the test of criticism and can easily compete with similar English or American productions. Tjebbo Penning, Van Koningsbrugge, (especially) Reuten et al. have in any case provided me with an entertaining evening. And that accent. Who cares about that? Just like nobody cares about an American actor in a British film or vice versa. If you ask me, just ant fuck.

The umpteenth The Sopranos in Mokum. With a now well-worn sketch of the Amsterdam penoze and an ambiguous role for the gangster woman. And let's face it: Jeroen van Koningsbrugge is not James Gandolfini or Bryan Cranston. A bit of bragging and screaming without the restrained aggression or charisma of the better villains, while his predictable transformation from sociable family man to sociopathic gang leader has little layering. In that respect, Sylvia (Thekla Reuten) is more believable and more humane as the gangster woman who tries to escape her popular milieu. It won't be original, but it's entertaining. But perhaps most disturbing is how 'Clean Hands' (2015) works towards a brave and moralistic climax. It's almost laughable how overly dramatic the various plot lines come together and the Shakespearean pathos is exaggerated a bit. As if there were 'CRIME DOESN'T PAY!' had to be shouted out with the Caps Lock key.
