The Wanted 18 plot

"In the Middle East, only cows are black and white"

In the West Bank, in the town of Beit Sahour (the epicenter of the uprising), a group of villagers - including a teacher, a pharmacist and a doctor - decide to buy eighteen cows and produce milk in a cooperative. Their venture is so successful that the collective farm becomes a landmark and the cows become local celebrities, until the Israeli military gets wind of it. The army says the cows pose "a threat to the national security of the State of Israel". The farm is forced to continue illegally: the cows continue to produce their "Intifada milk". The Israeli army is constantly on their heels.

Cows for Freedom. 'The Wanted 18' (2014) is an unsettling blend of autobiography, animation, oral history, and a journalistic account of the events surrounding Beit Sahour. At the heart of this documentary is the wondrous story of the arrival of eighteen cows, enabling the Palestinian villagers to produce their own milk. For the Palestinians, the arrival of the cows offers a glimmer of hope during their peaceful protest against the oppressor, while for the Israelis, these same cows pose a potential security risk. For what if freedom and independence truly come within reach? An absurdist cat-and-mouse game ensues to keep the cows out of the hands of the Israeli army. The wondrous blend of raw realism and dreamy fantasy makes 'The Wanted 18' (2014) a warm portrait of nonviolent resistance within the Palestinian struggle for freedom.
