Queen of Earth plot
Two women retreat to a beach house to escape all their worries and the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Although the two grew up as best friends, they soon realize how far apart they have grown and their suspicions grow.

A film that didn't quite work for me, because it didn't really appeal rhythmically. Intimate dialogues are interrupted by shots of characters staring into space in torment. A soundtrack that mainly consists of hard synths and/or minimal melodies, which undermine the intensely "oppressive" atmosphere. Quietly sad situations that explode in soapy hysteria.
Considering the subject of the film and the mental state of Elisabeth Moss (who plays her part well) I can understand such a rhythm disturbance in the film, but that is no excuse for me to appreciate the film more. Well done downward spiral character study psychological drama, but that execution is just not for me. I can't say more about it at the moment.

A year ago, Catherine [Elisabeth Moss] helped her best friend Virginia [Katherine Waterston] through a crisis during a summer house stay. Since then, Catherine's relationship has failed and her father has passed away. Virginia now hopes to be a support and confidant for Catherine, but now that they are both carrying a lot of emotional baggage, cracks appear in their relationship. With ominous musical cues, Ross Perry wrongly gives the impression that an exciting or shocking twist seems to come at any moment. The deception is disturbing, but Moss and Waterston deliver top performances in their emotionally complex roles and Fugit is effective as one of the disruptors during the stay at the summer house.
