People in 1960 were shocked by Psycho. Blood Feast is released 3 years later. What a difference. Now Psycho was of course much more exciting. I decided to work through a list of Grindhouse films that appealed to me. This was one of them, but what a monstrosity this is. There's certainly a lot of gore and limbs in it for 63, but that's about it. The film has acting that I have never seen worse anywhere else. Furthermore, I thought the killer looked strange. I kept seeing something about his gray hair that made me unable to take him seriously. I think the first scene was also the best.

Even though I'm a trash fan, this was really bad.

Due to the short playing time, 1.5*

The first so-called 'splatter' movie. Besides the fact that Blood Feast is quite dated, even the Blu-ray is not really nice, it has many other things going wrong. Apart from the few murders, it simply isn't interesting enough. And a good script could already be made in the 1960s.

Although the budget was barely $60,000, I think you can pick better actors off the street for that kind of money. Sometimes it's really too bad for words. The police officer who constantly hits the desk hard, the static recitation of every sentence by various cast members and of course the killer who is very over the top. Overly bad, but not really fun. Unfortunately, it also often revolves around the police officer who has to solve the case but who cannot find any clues, even though the killer works quite rigorously.

The murders may be theatrical, but the effects are still acceptable. It's all very red, but that has been done worse, even in modern films. It's a shame that details sometimes leave much to be desired. The kind of heart that is torn out without a hole being visible in the chest. That kind of nonsense. The soundtrack, in turn, is pretty bad. At times it was a bit reminiscent of the tunes from the old LucasArts games, although it fit in there perfectly. Not here.

The biggest advantage is the short playing time. It's great that the film is regularly boring in such a short time. The murders are fun, but that's about it. Maybe add half a penny for the historical value. Not recommended.

This film was said to be the forerunner in the then very young splatter genre, perhaps you should give the maker that credit, the gore is indeed excessive and perhaps shocking for the time.

It took a few more years before make-up wizards such as Bottin, Savini, etc. showed what was possible with a larger budget and a more professional approach.

the acting is really the archilles heel of this film, monotonous droning of lines is the standard here and the level is depressingly poor.
