A beautiful and quiet film that tells a simple story about a city boy who has to stay with a friend of his mother in the summer. There he comes into contact with life in the countryside and also meets a smart girl. Nice nostalgic film about the adventures of children during a summer holiday.

The acting performances are fine, and the dialogues - especially around the outspoken girl - give the film a cheerful tone. Her character provides the comic relief in this otherwise rather light-hearted drama. The scene with the priest cycling after the family doctor was also nicely conceived.

Nice movie with a feel-good effect. 3.5*

Stunning acting by the two youngsters. Spectacular as Vanessa Guedji (now most active in the music world) and disarmingly simple and honest as Antoine Hubert.

As said, the children carry the film. The film's purpose is clear: children discover a great deal of the adult world and adults sometimes find realization in the unconditional openness of children. It's a pity that the film flirts with a melodramatic tone at the end.

What a touching film! 5 stars!

Marcelle doesn't have it easy; there is no love anymorebetween her and her husband caused by the loss of their stillborn son Jean-Pierre. Louis - a city child from Paris - has to stay with this couple because his mother has to give birth and the father is absent.
Louis has not discovered much of life yet. His girlfriend Martine, on the other hand, the daughter of the hairdresser in Rouans, has gathered a great deal of knowledge about life, the villagers and the environment.

The film reflects very well the initially non-existent love between Pelo and Marcelle, the friendship between Louis and Martine, the puppy love between Martine's sister Solange and Simon, the desire for love of the children (Louis and Martine) in relation to their completely absent father. It is nice to see how Louis gradually gains Pelo's trust.

The film is, as it were, an ode to the rural life of yesteryear and the solidarity of the villagers. Both the beautiful and the less beautiful sides of this village past are magnificently captured.
The pettiness of the pastor - who, despite his literacy, does not know what is going on, is made clear by his interventions for example when he crosses the sad Martine who is wearing her red shoes.
