Cobain: Montage of Heck plot

The director of the documentary, Brett Morgen, dug into Kurt's archives for the film. There he discovered two hundred hours of never-before-publicized audio and music, homemade videos, and four thousand pages of the musician's written lyrics. All this is used to create a portrait of Kurt, who was not often seen in the media.

Reasonable. Chaotic, artsy. Occasionally interesting concert images. Many songs remain top notch.

Don't like it much.

Admittedly, the shape is quite unusual. A mix of old movies, interviews and animation to spice things up a bit. There isn't much of a line in this documentary, except that the narration is just chronological. But ultimately the film mainly wants to give an impression of the person Cobain.

That works fine, but the sketched image is one that I didn't have much appreciation or interest in. Despite some sad whining about Cobain's youth, he remains mainly an annoying figure who became very popular, also sought that popularity and then started complaining that he would rather not be popular.

I have to say that I also had nothing to do with Nirvana in the past. It was a different scene and they weren't that well known here. Some chart hits, but otherwise not the earth-shattering band that was usually made of it. I still don't like the music at all, just like I still find the lyrics very bland and can't be fascinated by the "art" behind the complaining.

The animations in between are also not of a high level, the interviews remain a bit empty and you mainly see the demise of a not so interesting figure who often struggles with himself. Probably interesting food for the fans and kudos for trying something different with this documentary, but it didn't make much of an impression.

Very nice documentary about Kurt Cobain. In my puberty I turned Nirvana all gray, and all the albums are still in my CD case. And as a lover of biographies I already devoured several books about the band. This documentary tells little new in terms of band biography.

However, when it comes to the personal level, this documentary is a lot deeper than many biopics. I find the use of Cobain's diaries very double (because: private), but they have been public for so long that this discussion does not need to be had again with regard to this film.

A big plus are the animation and the countless private images. The total results in a somewhat chaotic, but all the more striking portrait. It offers an interesting look into the highly creative, yet difficult spirit of one of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century.
