"Love makes monsters of us all."
Edith Cushing's mother dies when she is still young, but her ghost watches over her and warns her regularly. Edith grows up in the Victorian era, but she aspires to be more than just a woman of marriageable age. She wants to be a writer. Edith abandons her childhood friend, the Doctor, and falls in love with Thomas Sharpe, a mysterious stranger. She even marries him against her father's will and goes to live with Thomas and his sister, Lady Lucille Sharpe, in a castle in Scotland, far from everything she has known. Edith then finds out that not everything is as it seems, because Thomas is just after her money.

Opinions really differ about this film. I'm on the positive side, because I think Crimson Peak is a nice thriller, with a great set and excellent actors. I think it's another case of 'hate it or love it', where a middle ground is not really possible. Now I have to admit that I am also a fan of Del Toro's style, and Crimson Peak is completely in line with expectations.

I love gothic romance with all its mystery, passion, taboo and horror and where most movies in that genre are boring because they are uninspired and 10th grade derivatives of the original stories like Dracula, Del Toro rediscovers all the clichés of that genre to breathe life into a beautiful, exciting film as a result. I enjoyed this movie very much.
