Director Amr Salama makes great crowd-pleasers about charged topics. 'Asmaa' (2011) about the taboo on HIV infections and 'Sheikh Jackson' (2017) about the tensions between Western influences versus conservative Islam. In 'Excuse My French' (2014) he discusses discrimination against the Coptic community and the poor state of public schools. It takes some time to persevere when you get an excruciatingly long introduction with a hip introduction round of the most important characters. In the background an unrelated voice-over as an omniscient narrator. All a bit too crooked and archaic. But 'Excuse My French' (2014) takes off when little Hany (Ahmed Dash) pretends to be Muslim at a public school so as not to be bullied by peers. It helps that the school environment is depicted as a tough and unforgiving place, where Hany finds his talents unappreciated by substandard teachers and brats.
