The film takes us from Freud's first experiences with hysterical patients and with hypnosis to his exposition of the Oedipus complex to a jeering physician audience. The father of psychoanalysis is a detective who, in his study of the causes of hysteria, descends into the twilight zone of the subconscious and thus develops not only his theory of sexuality in childhood but also unveils the secrets of his own personality.
