Sunny Side Up plot

The ancient mysterious Sunderum festival is celebrated on one of the Wadden Islands every year. Non-islanders must leave the island; no snoopers are wanted. Daan and Judith are a couple from Amsterdam and have been happily together for seven years. To celebrate this anniversary, they accidentally end up on the island just this weekend. When the young urban couple won't budge, it quickly becomes clear that they will not only have to fight against the evil islanders, but that, under the pressure of the mounting tension, they will also have to fight their own demons.

Psychological thriller that never really becomes exciting.

The relationship between the two leads is central. The relationship clearly has dark sides and they are exposed quite well. We get a decent insight into the (psychological) relationships within the relationship. Very intriguing, but not exciting. No thrills.

The thriller element would then have to come from the partying islanders. However, that doesn't happen. Intimidation and drunkenness from that corner do not create an oppressive atmosphere. There could have been more to it. Missed opportunity. Shame.

Weeber and Hoekstra act well. Natural and hardly over the top. The dialogues are okay.

The island appears very poor as a backdrop. Also a shame.

I found the relationship between Daan and Judith and their behavior towards each other interesting. The dialogues are distinct, in a way that I actually quite liked, and I wasn't bothered by the acting. I think Hannah Hoekstra is a convincing actress. I often think she comes across as very realistic. Everything about the party and the angry boys from the neighborhood interested me less. I don't think it's a high-quality film and not very exciting anyway, but it can be given a 6. 3*

Positive windfall from home soil, in which Hannah Hoekstra and Edgert Jan Weeber deal remarkably naturally with the pitiful dialogues they receive. They are regularly made very difficult by Willem Bosch's weak screenplay and he can therefore be blamed for the lack of ambition. Lourens Blok's direction remains in between. The tension is sometimes increased considerably, but when things really need to get going, Sunny Side Up remains too distant. The film works mainly on a psychological level, because both protagonists act distinctively and convincingly enough to keep their characters interesting throughout the film. A playing time of only 80 minutes provides bonus points, as the content does not have much to say. It is also a pity that Ko Zandvliet's role is not sufficiently developed in terms of threat and danger, but his acting is also far above average. Very pleasantly surprised by this work, which I was never bored with.
