So you see, God lives in Brussels and it's not a good one. Fortunately, he has a daughter of 10 who is a bit disobedient but also revolting and provided the good advice of "her big brother" sets things up nicely and gives rise to a wonderful, divergent film, with many human portraits, philosophy, symbolism, sneer at existing situations and above all imaginatively funny.

Poelvoorde, a Walloon, who also made it in the great France, is perfect in his cynical moments with his "ordinateur" and in his irascible moods, while an actress like Yolande Moreau, in any role (unforgettable in " Séraphine") still attracts attention. Kudos, of course, to the young Pili Groyne, without forgetting the filmmaker, Jaco van Dormael', who once again brought something very "special". Nice.

Sure, there are certainly a few things to criticize about the film, but it is so full of unique scenes, ideas and grandiose finds that, after Mr Nobody, this is another unparalleled film by Van Dormael.

When Jaco Van Dormael rewrites the history of mankind, it is already love that strikes the clock. Love for each other, that goes without saying, but also – and perhaps even above all – for the eccentric in each other. A blessing, surely in these times of uniformity, or the opposite: obligatory eccentricity. While the uniqueness of every person is hidden in the most silly details, isn't it?

An apostle who has renounced love because she has written herself off. An apostle who has to wake up from a pointless office job and, following his feathered friends, declares himself an outlaw - all the way to Iceland? An apostle who dares to follow her instincts, and thanks for sleep-inducing luxury and libido-killing riches. An apostle who shows feeling once the caprice of hatred (a stray bullet) is broken through. And so on.

It is all far-fetched, but Van Dormael's surreal universe has always been a wonderful place to be. Where 'Mr. Nobody' breathed poetry from beginning to end, 'Le Tout Nouveau Testament' unfortunately occasionally lapses into all too obvious jokes and pranks. The slapstick element is very thick on it, and the enlarged roles of God and his other half could have easily been smaller.

Let's focus on the positive though: it's a film full of wit, hilarity, positive humanity and love, yes love, love! Fantastically portrayed, with many cinematographically unforgettable moments. All the more regrettable that Van Dormael did not dig deeper, towards a plot with more to it. In this guise, the story seems to be mainly an excuse to glue other ideas together…or is this too strict?
