Lyda is a prostitute with no education and no hope for the future. When she becomes pregnant unintentionally, she decides to leave the baby behind. She decides to flee her life and is helped by the banker Augustus Poggioli, who adopts her. Lydia is like a sister to the banker's real daughter, Fulvia. This goes well for so long, but meanwhile the son she left behind has grown up and is going astray...
