Particularly agree with the above comment. This film is quite easy to crack and perhaps a bit more difficult to appreciate, but Ferrara is really an above-average filmmaker. He has made films that are generally regarded as good (Bad Lieutenant and King of New York) and also films that are outright crackers (including Fear City, Driller Killer). But those last films also really have something special.

Fear City is somewhere between a giallo by, for example, Argento and a socially-disrupted crime drama as a taxi driver, but is (a lot) less good. The nightlife in a nameless dirty city with only dubious characters, pimps, strippers, mafia, an unhinged murderer and other scum is depicted in a dirty, over-the-top way. But I did get caught and sucked in.

There is certainly something to criticize about the film, but this Ferrara also really has something. The acting is quite good, cinematographically interesting and the film undeniably has a double meaning.

Curious killer.

Atmospheric crime film in which the good guys are not the police, but criminals. In any case, the pimp-like Scalia and Berenger are portrayed sympathetically. The story is quite uneven and has a somewhat strange progression, but it is entertaining. Including a particularly curious killer and the then beautiful Griffith.

Reasonable.

The red light district is shaken by a serial killer who is also skilled in martial arts. Strange film, reminiscent of an Italian giallo in style, but with an American B-movie sauce. I thought it was quite a sleazy film, which from the very first minutes zooms in on the beautiful ass of a stripping Melanie Griffith (drool), and also has more than enough nudity and blood. It all sounds more impressive than it actually is, because the baddie is colorless and the police work is nothing exceptional. The atmosphere is stronger than the plot, but this film is still not a punishment to watch.
