Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte plot

"The years will soon erase a lover's lies...the blood on his face!"

Charlotte Hollis is a wealthy spinster in the southern United States. She is avoided by her environment because of a murder she allegedly committed 40 years ago. However, her guilt was never proven. She lives alone on the parental plantation. During the day she gets help from her loyal servant Velma. She sometimes has a hard time, because Charlotte is not completely stable mentally. She only keeps in touch with her cousin Miriam sporadically. She comes to visit when Charlotte is forced to leave her house by the state.

Robert Aldrich, one of those all-round filmmakers, made some very solid films in the 1950s and 1960s, and this "Hush...Hush...Sweet Charlotte" is certainly one of his very best.

While the title suggests a rather light genre, the film is a heavy dramatic product about the neurotic behavior of an older woman saddled with a very unpleasant event from the past.

While Aldrich succeeds in systematically increasing the suspense surrounding the truth and reserving the denouement for the end, thus staging a very captivating piece, the film's appreciation lies largely in the stunning performances of the quartet consisting of Bette Davis (who commands most of the attention), Olivia De Havilland, Joseph Cotton, and Agnes Moorehead.

The setting is excellent. The dialogue is clever, with the scene at the dinner table where Charlotte and Miriam curse each other for the first time serving as a prime example.

Who cares whatever happened to baby Jane?

Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte is a class above its more famous and acclaimed predecessor. In a remote Louisiana village, where the swamps are as slippery as people's motivations, former southern belle Charlotte lives in her ornate estate, where she hides a terrible secret that is slowly driving her mad.

As mentioned above, Bette Davis is once again incredibly on fire as the eccentric woman. The set design, and the excellent cast with De Havilland and Cotten, make Hush, Hush an unforgettable classic. Did anyone else think of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion/Phantom Manor attraction when they saw the plot?

Bette Davis with her signature piercing, piercing eyes! Here too, I was delightfully enchanted by her.
