Nothing new under the sun in itself: a series about a serial killer, with many references to Silence of The Lambs (such as the help of a prisoner, of course, but also for example the insects and the night vision goggles). It is quite well put together with nice, calm camera work and at times it is tense.

There are many, many surprises and twists. They make it fascinating, but actually there are too many of them that make you unconsciously adjust to it and crucial things become predictable, such as in episode 5, that the perpetrator is a transvestite or transsexual, and that the family friend is the perpetrator. The shot of her in the car when Damien calls the psychiatrist confirms that suspicion.

Furthermore, I can accept stupid acts in series, but that only one person is guarding a serial killer - you can feel her escape coming on your clogs - and that she is sent into the wide world with a loose carrying transmitter[/spoiler ] goes too far for me.

Too bad, because it detracts from an otherwise pretty good series. After having seen Glacé and Une Chance de Trop, this is still a French series that I don't quite like. I don't think we'll ever be friends (while I am with French movies). Hopefully Les Témoins will change that.

Very good. Tension builds up quickly and stays there until the end. Little to no sinking moments which invites you to look through. Plot twists good but maybe a bit excessive. Also very decent acting. The title character in particular is fantastically cast. The ending is also well executed and still surprising. Doesn't look like there are more seasons to come and that's a good thing, would probably only detract.

Nice spin on the serial killer genre with Jeanne Deber (Carole Bouquet) as a kind of female Hannibal Lecter in an institution. Her son Damien (Fred Testot) is now a police officer and becomes involved in a serial murder case when a copycat of the praying mantis turns up. For him, it is a confrontation with the shadow his murderous mother has cast over his own life. 'La Mante' (2017) is a nice family drama packaged as a police thriller, in which the aspect 'the son of a serial killer' is cleverly incorporated. Psychologically strong because the series always evokes the tension whether Jeanne will betray her son again through her evil nature or whether she really seeks rapprochement. Unfortunately, the outcome of the murder mystery is somewhat disappointing due to the strange and far-fetched twists and turns. It would have worked better if the mother-son relationship and the new serial killer had been further apart. But I'd love to see these characters return in a follow-up season where their complex relationships are further explored.
