The Man in the High Castle plot

The series is set in an alternate history in which Germany and Japan won World War II by the murder of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. It revolves around SS undercover agent Joe Blake, the Jewish Frank Frink and his ex Juliana Crain, who in San Francisco gets a film role from her dying sister in which the Allies win the war, albeit only in 1947. Juliana wants to take that subversive film to the underground resistance in Colorado, but finds herself involved in a complex game of spies, double spies and triple spies around SS. leader Heydrich, the old Hitler, the Japanese secret police Kempeitai and the Japanese crown prince, who visits California.

Dit had best een interessante serie kunnen worden als de heren scenaristen zich meer aan het oorspronkelijke boek hadden gehouden, maar door hun eigen koers te varen schrijven zij zich gaandeweg volledig vast, wat resulteert in een van de belachelijkste seizoen finales ever. Mocht er nog een tweede seizoen komen dan hebben de heren heel wat uit te leggen. Verder voltrekt de serie zich zeer traag en had er hier en daar wel ietrs meer actie c.q spanning in gemogen.

This could have been an interesting series if the screenwriters had stuck more to the original book, but by setting their own course they gradually commit themselves, resulting in one of the most ridiculous season finales ever. If there is a second season, the gentlemen have a lot to explain. Furthermore, the series is very slow and could have used a little more action or suspense here and there.

Over alle 4 seizoenen... Ik heb het boek niet gelezen, wat misschien in het voordeel van deze serie werkt. Apart en boeiend verhaal waarbij in de uitvoering kosten nog moeite gespaard zijn. Zo'n beetje alle genres zijn hierin terug te vinden: thriller, drama, oorlog, mysterie, science fiction. Prima cast waarbij ik Chelah Horsdal (als Helen) het meest op vind vallen. Een minpuntje van deze serie is het plotseling verdwijnen van een aantal personages; alsof ze eruit geschreven moesten worden. Iets soortgelijks met het opschrift op de films "The Grasshopper Lies Heavy"; in het begin regelmatig te zien en op een gegeven moment verdwenen. Het slot was voor meerdere uitleg vatbaar maar vormde wel een prima afronding.

I haven't read the book, which may work in favor of this series. Distinctive and captivating story in which no expense has been spared in the execution. Almost all genres can be found here: thriller, drama, war, mystery, science fiction. Great cast where I like Chelah Horsdal (as Helen) the most. A downside of this series is the sudden disappearance of a number of characters; like they needed to be written out. Something similar with the caption on the movies "The Grasshopper Lies Heavy"; seen regularly in the beginning and disappeared at some point. The ending was open to multiple interpretations, but it was a good conclusion.

Vanwege een gratis 3 maanden abo op Prime een tweede juweel te gevonden na Fall out. Het idee achter het verhaal vind ik origineel. Hoe anders had het kunnen lopen als Hitler en Japan de oorlog hadden gewonnen. Dat het strijdtoneel nu het Amerikaanse continent is, is logisch om Nazi Duitsland en Japan tegen over elkaar te plaatsen. De neutral zone vind ik jammer. Het acteren is oké. Er wordt zelfs Duits en Japans gesproken. Soms wat te veel toevalligheden. Maar dat houdt de vaart er in. Ben benieuwd naar de volgende series.

I think the idea behind the story is original. How differently things could have turned out if Hitler and Japan had won the war. The fact that the battleground is now the American continent makes sense to pit Nazi Germany and Japan against each other. I think the neutral zone is a shame.

The acting is okay. German and Japanese are even spoken.

Sometimes too many coincidences. But that keeps the momentum going.

I'm curious about the next series.
