Welcome to the Atchfalaya River Basin, the largest swamp in America and one of the most ecologically diverse. With its towering moss-covered cypress trees, 300 species of birds, and 54 species of reptiles and amphibians, this 400,000-acre area in southern Louisiana is a gem of nature and undeniable splendor. Large American alligators, with their thick legs and powerful tails, scour the swamps. They get their food from the water: 90 species of fish and crustaceans form their prey. In the boats above them and on the mainland, you'll find residents with enormous energy, who are known worldwide for their cuisine, lively culture and unique dialect. They are the Swamp People.
