Interview with the Vampire plot

As a black man in the early twentieth century, Louis encountered the limitations of life as a black man in New Orleans and cannot resist the licentious Lestat de Lioncourt's offer of the ultimate escape: to join him as his vampire companion. But Louis's intoxicating new powers come at a violent price, and the introduction of Lestat's newest youngster, the childhood vampire Claudia, soon sets them on a decades-long road of revenge and penance.

Na seizoen 1 in New Orleans, speelt seizoen 2 van Interview with the Vampire zich grotendeels af in Parijs. Nou ja, in een studioversie daarvan; het is vrij duidelijk dat er niet op locatie in Frankrijk is gefilmd. In vergelijking met het eerste seizoen worden wat puntjes op de i gezet: er is een wat grotere cast, wat leidt tot meer afwisseling en meer actie en Jacob Anderson is blijkbaar verteld dat het allemaal wel wat losser en uitgesprokener mag, want hij is duidelijk minder stijf dan in het eerste seizoen. Oké, dat klopt ook verhaaltechnisch met de ontwikkeling van zijn karakter, maar ik blijf erbij dat hij in het eerste seizoen onderacteerde. Sterke punten blijven de gelikte gothic vormgeving en de broeierige sfeer. Vampiers = metafoor voor onderdrukte seksuele verlangens van allerlei soort, iets dat de makers hier prima begrijpen. Zwakke punt blijft de pacing; soms schiet het echt niet op.

After season 1 in New Orleans, season 2 of Interview with the Vampire takes place largely in Paris. Well, in a studio version of it; it is quite clear that it was not filmed on location in France.

Compared to the first season, some details are being ironed out: there is a slightly larger cast, which leads to more variety and more action, and Jacob Anderson was apparently told that things could be a bit looser and more outspoken, because he is clearly less stiff than in the first season. Okay, that also aligns with the development of his character story-wise, but I maintain that he underacted in the first season.

The strong points remain the slick gothic design and the sultry atmosphere. Vampires are a metaphor for repressed sexual desires of all kinds, something the creators understand perfectly here. The weak point remains the pacing; sometimes it really doesn't move forward.
