Trigonometry plot

Gemma and Kieran are a couple. The couple lives together in London, but can barely pay their rent due to the meager jobs as cafe owner and nurse. Because they really don't want to leave their house, they decide to look for a third roommate who can move in with them. The consequence? The newcomer ensures that the flat feels larger instead of smaller. Gradually, life gets easier, more fun and better with an extra pair of hands.

Heerlijke Britse dramady over een bijzondere driehoeksverhouding. Sensitief en observerend gefilmd, zorgt het onconventionele verhaal voor een een bijna vanzelfsprekende conclusie: deze menage-à-trois is een rijk liefdesverhaal met ups and downs. Net zoals in onze eigen relaties. Er wordt naturel en fenomenaal in geacteerd. Ray (Ariane Labed, met verrassende gelijkenis met Marion Cottilard uit haar haar pré-Hollywood periode), trekt als onderhuurder in bij Gemma (Thalissa Teixeira) en Kieran (Gary Carr). De serie is grappig, dramatisch en redelijk origineel, niet alleen qua thematiek. Zo is Ray olympisch synchroon-zwemster, kom daar maar eens om. De ondersteunende verhaallijnen (Ray's vriendin, werk, ouders) dragen in meer of mindere mate bij aan deze threesome. Niet drie, maar vier sterren!

Filmed with sensitivity and observation, the unconventional story leads to an almost self-evident conclusion: this menage-à-trois is a rich love story with ups and downs. Just like in our own relationships. The acting is natural and phenomenal. Ray (Ariane Labed, with surprising resemblance to Marion Cottilard from her pre-Hollywood period), moves in as a subtenant with Gemma (Thalissa Teixeira) and Kieran (Gary Carr). The series is funny, dramatic and quite original, not just in terms of thematics. Ray is an Olympic synchronized swimmer, for example. The supporting storylines (Ray's girlfriend, work, parents) contribute to this threesome to a greater or lesser extent. Not three, but four stars!

Verrassende serie. Ik heb er spijt van dat ik de eerste paar afleveringen gemist heb. Prima geacteerd. En mooi gemonteerd. Met een enorme vaart wordt je door de gebeurtenissen geleid, waarbij een paar scenes genoeg zijn om je je conclusies te laten trekken, zonder dat het je opgedrongen wordt. Een aanrader.

Surprising series. I regret missing the first few episodes. Well acted. And nicely mounted. You are led through the events at a tremendous speed, with a few scenes being enough to let you draw your conclusions without it being forced on you.

Recommended.

Een super fijne serie die eigenlijk zo'n beetje alles goed doet. Nouja, het moment van Ray had iets subtieler kunnen worden ingeleid, maar aan de andere kant, dat is ook wel een beetje zoals dat soort dingen gaan. Denk ik. En wellicht ook dat in de laatste aflevering er wat wordt gehint op een vervolg, maarja, waar zou dat nog over moeten gaan. De drie hoofdrollen zijn prima, waarbij vooral Labed in de eerste aflevering opvalt door haar fysiek op de tandjes lopende uiterlijk - iets wat nogal makkelijk associeert met topsport. En ook grappig hoe haar kapsel in de latere afleveringen toch net dat tikje Frans-heid toevoegt. Wat me doet herinneren aan een reclameposter die ik ooit in een Tsjechische kapperszaak zag hangen, zoiets van 'gun jezelf French Girl hair', tot hilariteit en verbazing van mijn toenmalige Franse vriendinnetje die niet geloofde dat zoiets echt bestond. Nou volgens mij wel dus, en dit is er een mooi voorbeeld van.

A super fine series that does pretty much everything right. Well, Ray's moment could have been introduced a bit more subtly, but then again, that's also how these things go. I think. And maybe also that in the last episode there is a hint of a sequel, but yeah, what else would that be about.

The three main roles are fine, with Labed in particular standing out in the first episode because of her physically on edge appearance - something that is easily associated with top sports. And it's also funny how her hairdo in the later episodes adds just that little bit of Frenchness. Which reminds me of an advertising poster I once saw hanging in a Czech hairdresser's, something like 'treat yourself French Girl hair', to the hilarity and amazement of my French girlfriend at the time who didn't believe that such a thing really existed. Well, I think it did, and this is a good example of it.
