The Resident plot

The Resident is about a stern, brilliant doctor, Conrad Hawkins, who shows an idealistic young intern, Devon Pravesh, on his first day what really goes on behind the curtains of the hospital. He shows him both the good and bad sides of modern medicine. Lives can be saved or lost, but expectations will always be shattered. Devon finds out that working in a hospital is different in reality than how he imagined it. Together with Conrad and the rest of the staff, however, they try to make the best of it.

The Resident season 1

Antoine Fuqua (Mayor of Kingstown, The Terminal List, Shooter) is a director and executive producer who loves plain language. This is also the case in hospital drama The Resident. In the 14-episode opening season, subtlety is sometimes hard to find. The Resident - doctor in training - is roughly about the moral dilemmas between the medical industry, read: big money, and patient care.

Budget cuts, VIP wards for wealthy patients, understaffing, private clinics; the commercial healthcare system makes the American divide painfully clear in The Resident. It delivers a solid and smooth drama, comparable to hospital series like House and the mother of all series in this genre: ER. The Resident is sometimes over the top, as if all previous medical series have to be surpassed. Episode 12 takes the cake, and literally falls out of the sky.

Just like with courtroom dramas and romcoms, you know in advance what you're going to get. That's no different in The Resident. The fantasy world of The Resident features beautiful actors, terminally ill patients (who still look fantastic), medical heroes, a bit of romance and some venomous drama. Who doesn't want to believe in fairy tales?
